Meet our Coaches!

Justin Ahearn
Justin is our Sailing Director who also coaches our Windsurf Foil Team and made our youth program what it is today. Justin started sailing 'late' as a high school sophomore through CCSC's summer camp and immediately was hooked. He joined the Clearwater Yacht Club laser team because CCSC did not have a youth racing program at the time. He raced lasers through the end of high school before attending USF and joining the sailing team. College sailing helped him evolve as a sailor and allowed him to attend regattas across the country and learn from the best sailors of his age group. Midway through college Justin started racing windsurfers. He started with the Kona One Design and eventually went on to compete in 4 Kona world championships, finishing 8th in 2016 and 7th in 2019. He then moved on to the high-performance Formula windsurf class and competed in a world championship, North American Championship, and 5 National Championships. Around 2017 he bought his first windsurf foil, which sparked his love for racing. He competed in the open foil class until 2020 when the Olympic Windsurf equipment was changed to the IQ Foil one design class. Since then, he has been heavily involved with the class as both a sailor and a coach. His proudest coaching accomplishment is building the CCSC youth program into the large group of active, passionate sailors that it is today. And that took years of persistence and hard work. His favorite part of coaching is creating lifelong sailors and when CCSC junior sailing alumni achieve in adult sailing, he says "it fills me with pride."

Kellen Bernard
Kellen is our 420 Development Team, 420 Race Team Coach, and one of our Private Lesson Instructors. Kellen has been sailing for 30 years and he learned in Annapolis Maryland. Kellen has had top 10 finishes at C420 Nationals, North Americans, College Team Race and Fleet Race Nationals, and Buzzards Bay Regatta. He had top 5 finishes at High School Fleet Race Nationals and Team Race Nationals. As a coach Kellen's favorite thing is to watch his team win and that includes watching them top 5 finish at Orange Bowl and High School Nationals.

Mateo Rodriguez
Mateo is our Opti Green Fleet, STEM Team Coach, and one of our Private Lesson Instructors. Mateo has been sailing for 12 years and learned to sail here at CCSC! Mateo was the captain of the FSU Sailing Team for 3 years and led FSU as the A skipper to back-to-back Fleet Race National Championships. He is a 2x All-SAISA first-team skipper, 2022-2023 SAISA undergraduate leader of the year, and 2022-2023 FSU Sports Club member of the year. Mateo has also placed 2nd at Lightning Midwinters in 2021 and VX One winter series in 2023 and 3rd at the US J24 National Championship in 2023. Mateo's favorite part about coaching is watching that moment when a concept starts to click in his sailors’ minds.

Macy Windsurfing

Macy Parke
Macy is our Windsurfing Development Team Coach. Macy has been sailing for 8 years and learned to sail here at CCSC! She learned to sail through the summer camp program and loved it so much that she joined Green Fleet. Macy went through the Opti program and then tried windsurfing and was immediately hooked. She started on the Bic Techno293 and sailed on the IQ Foil for a brief period. Macy has 1st place finishes at the 2020 Windsurf Midwinters, 2021 US Windsurfing Longboard National Championship, and 2021 Windsurfing Windfoil National Championship. She has 2nd place finishes at the 2021 and 2022 Tillo Cup and a 3rd place finish at the 2019 Windsurf Orange Bowl. Macy's favorite part about coaching is watching her kids accomplish goals that they have worked so hard on.

Nick Dovbniak
Nick is our Opti Red, White, and Blue Coach. He has been sailing since he was 2 years old. He grew up sailing on Lake Huron in Sarnia Ontario. He started in opti's at age 6 and moved on to laser 2's at 12. He raced competitively since as a junior, competing in Ontario Summer Games, and North American championships. He sailed at URI in college for 4 years. During his time as a professional sailing, he has won many regattas including Block Island Race Week, 8mr North American's, and is part of the crew that holds the record for the STC Block Island Race. He is in his second year of coaching after having spent years coaching keelboats.
